Background Lighting and Color Gels for Product Photography

Mary Kerrigan Mary Kerrigan · 1 min read ·

The background is the quiet half of every product photograph, and lighting it well separates a professional image from a snapshot. A clean product on a properly lit background needs a dedicated light aimed not at the subject but behind it, and color gels turn that same background light into a tool for mood, branding, and separation that a plain setup cannot match. Background lighting starts with a separate source aimed at the backdrop, placed behind or beside the product and flagged so it does not spill onto the subject. The goal is a smooth, even wash that lifts the background to a clean tone, and for pure white product shots the background must read bright enough to blow out slightly without contaminating the product’s edges. Getting that separation right is what makes the product look as though it floats rather than sits against a wall.Color gels change the background from neutral to expressive. A gel placed over the background light tints the entire backdrop, and because the subject is lit separately by uncolored light, its own colors stay accurate while the background carries the hue.

This is the standard way to create a branded or editorial look, and it works
