Full Frame Sensor Dynamic Range at ISO 100 to 12800

Dynamic range is the quiet spec that separates a sensor that survives hard light from one that clips the highlights, and full frame sensors are where the measurement matters most. At base ISO a modern full frame chip records fourteen to fifteen stops, enough to hold detail in a bright sky and a shadowed foreground at the same time, and the way that range erodes as ISO climbs is the real story.At ISO 100 the best full frame sensors give photographers enough latitude to lift shadows four stops without the noise becoming objectionable, which is why base ISO is the standard for landscape and studio work. Push the ISO higher and each stop of gain costs roughly a stop of dynamic range, so by ISO 3200 the sensor is working with several stops less headroom, and highlight clipping arrives much sooner than it did at base.The pattern is not linear and it is not identical across brands.
